---procrastination---

Probably everyone (except me) has seen this already. It's Johnny Kelly's graduation work from the RCA in London, made in 2007. Great animation, and I really like the voice over.
(And just watched it for the 7th time instead of finishing the illustrations that need to be ready by Tuesday.)

------------John David Deardourff---------

Once again, the guy behind booooooom.com made me slightly jealous for finding these great screen prints from John David Deardourff first.

------------Quenton Miller----------

It's not very likely that a drawing-and text-combination actually make us laugh.
Quenton Miller's work totally did; Almost every of his little witty drawings showing humans or animals in absurd situations combined with seemingly off-hand scribbly texts does work.
Quenton Miller is like David Shrigley in funny and more anarchistic.
So we hope to see more of him in the future.

John Lurie: Learn to Draw

Yes, John Lurie, the actor and musician.
He made the book "Learn to Draw Vol.1" which is full of funny, ironic scribbly drawings, and another book with paintings, called "A Fine Example of Art" (which I haven't seen yet, unfortunately).
Here's a link to more of his art.

Thanks to Seamus for lending me the book (saying that he really needs it back. Which was in 2010. It's gonna happen, I promise.)

------------Thomas Hirschhorn---------

Last post of 2011: Swiss installation artist Thomas Hirschhorn, one of my favorites. (If you ever have a chance to see one of his exhibitions, don't miss it.)

Best Wishes for 2012!

FRESH- Cutting Edge Illustration, 1-3

Besides the compilation "Illustrators Unlimited - the Essence of Contemporary Illustration" from Gestalten Publishing, there has been another release on illustration in 2011, edited by Slanted Magazine: "Fresh - Cutting Edge Illustration".
Generally, books with words like "essence", "ultimate" or "cutting edge" in the title instantly evoke a strong scepticism in me. Also the in-your-face cover design of "Fresh", with some strangely unmotivated pixel-like patterns on the spine, made me almost not look inside.
But both books, "Illustrators Unlimited" and "Fresh" turned out to be pleasant surprises.
"Fresh" comes along as quite an ambitious project: it's a box with 3 books, dividing illustration into the categories Object, Public and Print.
One might argue that Public and Object are displaying works that should rather be shown in books on Street Art and Industrial Design, but for me, looking at the choices, the compilation presents a convincing concept and an interesting take on the term "illustration".
The artists featured in the book were selected through a Call for Entries in March. Interestingly, in the comment section of this Open Call unfolded a long discussion about whether or not illustrators should try to have their ideas and personal style displayed in compilations like "Fresh" while not getting paid for it.

----------the monster engine--------

The Monster Engine is a project by illustrator Dave de Vries : It's all about what children's drawing's would look like if they were painted realistically.

Happy Holidays everybody!

------------huber.huber----------------

Oh wow: just when I thought 2011 is as-good-as-over and no more surprises are waiting, I stumbled upon the book "Universen" by the Swiss twins/art duo Reto and Markus Huber a.k.a. huber.huber.
I (obviously) have a weak spot for Swiss artists, but I had never heard of them before.
They have really a lot of great work on their website and "Universen" is already their 4th publication.
from top to bottom: from survival of the fittest, hunting women, cover of Universen.

----------Sunna Ben Guðrúnardóttir----

Sunna Ben (1989, Iceland) is quite freshly graduated from art school. I really like her drawing series "wonderful news", in which she illustrates stories from the news.

------------12 drawings a day-------------

12 drawings a day is a really nice animation by French animation director Denis Chapon. He says about it:

"During 3 years (2008-2011) i have been drawing 12 drawing of animation every day, it make one second of film. I had no plans what so ever before starting the first drawing. And then, each of the folowing days, I took the 3 last drawing from the day before and kept on animating. I use a none erasable pen, and drew on the back side of used A4 paper."

Here's the link, enjoy!
